What India Can Learn From British Education System

The Indian education structure at present fails drastically in meeting the global standards of education practiced across the developed nations. There lies an urgent need to make the country’s educational framework more productive and efficient via focussing on improving the quality of teaching, infrastructure of educational institutes, formulating quality curriculum etc.

In this article we will discuss in detail about the British education system and what India cal learn from it.
In the United Kingdom there are 5 levels of education. These include early, primary, secondary, Further education and Higher education. Education is compulsory for every child between the ages of 5 and 16. This comprises of early, primary and secondary education. Further and Higher education is the levels of education pursued at university and colleges. In this aspect we could adopt the system of compulsory education to the whole of country and implement it strictly.

Every three and four year olds should be entitled to receive fifteen hours of pre-school education for at least 35 weeks of the year. There is a need to establish state run nursery schools within the premises of primary schools with well trained teachers and other support staff. Teachers who are trained in child psychology and staff who are trained in medical knowledge treatments should be available all the time. There should be single regulatory body and quality framework to oversee the functioning of these schools.

The primary education should focus more on the overall development of the child. The major goal should be achieving numeracy and basic literacy amongst all pupils as well as foundations in core subjects like maths and science. There should be separate classes to teach students about the emergency procedures to be followed in a May Day situation, road safety and other important social aspects.

The secondary education schools should be equipped with play grounds, laboratories and various indoor and outdoor sports. There should be a qualified physical education teacher and coaches for different sports. The teachers should encourage the students to pursue their interests. There should also be child care specialists, psychologists and qualified medical staff in educational institutes.. Boarding schools should be established to take care of underprivileged children.

Higher education system in the country is crippled by various factors. The curriculum taught in most of the institutes is outdated and doesn’t include any relevant information. The institutions fail to teach life skills to students. They only encourage the students to finish the course they are pursuing and complete the exams.

There is also a major lack of laboratories and research facilities. There are very few institutions in the country which facilitates and encourage students in the research field, majority of the institutes only focus on the teaching part. This absence of research facilities and even students who wish to research further hampered the scientific and medicine sector the most. There is a dearth of qualified candidates in these fields. Thus leaving the country no other option but buy the technologies and other essentials from other countries, paying them premium prices thus hampering the economic development of the country.
